Maddison Bean named First-Gen Student of the Month

°ÅÀÖÊÓƵ has recognized Maddison Bean, a graduate student in Speech and Hearing Sciences (SPHS), as its February 2025 First-Gen Student of the Month. Bean, from Deweyville, Texas, is the first in her family to attend college and has consistently excelled academically throughout her journey.Maddison Bean

A standout in both her undergraduate and graduate studies, Bean has been named to the Dean’s List and President’s List multiple times. During her undergraduate years, she also contributed to undergraduate research, including presenting a poster titled “A Three-Dimensional Narrative Exploration of the Life of Deaf/Hard of Hearing Individuals Who Use Assistive Hearing Technologies" at the Office of Undergraduate Research EXPO. The research was conducted under the mentorship of Dr. Millicent Musyoka in the Department of Deaf Studies & Deaf Education.

"I take great pride in being a first-generation student because my achievements are a reflection of the sacrifices my family has made," Bean said. "This recognition is especially meaningful to me, as I strive to inspire my nieces, nephews, siblings, and younger cousins to believe in themselves and pursue their dreams, no matter the field."

°ÅÀÖÊÓƵ’s First-Gen Student of the Month program honors students who have overcome obstacles to succeed in higher education, recognizing their hard work and resilience. Bean’s accomplishments also align with the goals of the First-Generation Connections program at °ÅÀÖÊÓƵ. This initiative provides first-gen students with essential tools and support to navigate the academic, social, emotional, and physical challenges that can come with being the first in a family to attend college.

First-Generation Connections helps students whose parents or guardians did not earn a four-year degree in the United States by building a supportive network and fostering a sense of belonging on campus. Bean’s story is a testament to the power of this community, as she continues to break barriers and set a strong example for future generations of students.
